Equine Veterinary Education paper

This is the inner side of the upper left row of cheek teeth.

There is a small amount of chewed grass at the gum line/tooth junction just left and slightly above the center of the picture.  The gum is not sticking to the tooth and food is packed under the gum. The food has a bad odor and this is detected by rubbing a finer along the spot and then sniffing.

This the same pocket after treatment. Tooth has been smoothed and the gum has been abraded to stimulate healing. the pocket is then packed with antibiotics.

Four weeks post treatment. Gum has healed and is now adhered to the tooth.

Six month recheck showed the problem has not reoccurred.
